GFA Media Release (updated). – Veterans Football is going from strength to strength in Gibraltar under the guidance of Grassroots Manager Leslie Asquez and Veterans Manager Leigh Thorne with regular tournaments being held and participation levels constantly increasing.
One of the main themes of Veterans’ Football recently has been collection money for Local charities, and today three presentations took place at the Gibraltar FA’s headquarters:
The Annual Cavalcade Cup was won this year by Prince of Wales FC and Gibraltar FA Veterans Manager – Leigh Thorne presented a cheque of £400.00 to Mr Eric Abudarham of the Cavalcade Fund. Mr Abudarham was extremely grateful for the donation and emphasized the links that football in Gibraltar has with the Cavalcade, which was born 60 years ago out of Gibraltar Utd FC, a club where he used to be the President.
A second donation for £200.00 was made to the Stroke Association UK’s John Shepard Jr. Albert Parody, Director of Lynx FC, and a player in the Lynx FC side who won the Veterans ‘Christmas Cup’ made the presentation to John who as made a remarkable recovery after suffering from a Stroke and is now doing sterling work to promote Stroke awareness in Gibraltar.
The third donation was made to the Royal British Legion from proceeds raised by the Veterans from last year’s Poppy Day Match. Leigh Thorne who is a Warrant Officer Class 2 and I Company Sergeant Major in the Royal Gibraltar Regiment collected the cheque on their behalf and will be delivering the donation to this very worthy cause.
Further charitable donations will be made as the Gibraltar FA’s Veterans Football programme for 2016 already underway.
