Gibraltar set to meet Latvia tonight in possible testing ground for Nations League

Gibraltar v Liechtenstein Football - Gibraltar 0-0 LichtensteinThe Gibraltar national team is hours away from their third international this Easter with Gibraltar facing Latvia, 20:00pm kick off at the Victoria Stadium.

Gibraltar already played Liechtenstein last week, drawing 0-0. A Rock XI selection then went to San Roque for a friendly match (most of the players not among the first choice team) and were defeated 3-1.

Tonight they will play Latvia where Gibraltar will be hoping to get their first victory since the qualifiers in home ground.

Since joining UEFA Gibraltar has already risen two places in the “UEFA rankings for club competitions”, listed at 52 just one below Wales. Whilst Liechtenstein, whom they drew against were listed at 45. Latvia is ranked at 42.

With UEFA looking at changing their Euro nations format and introduce the European Nations League, Gibraltar could be facing similar opposition to that faced this Easter on a regular basis. The UEFA Nations League proposals would  split into divisions countries depending on their ranking and status, with each division divided into groups of four, with play-offs later played to decide on promotions and relegations, Gibraltar could be facing similar opposition to that faced this Easter on a regular basis. Latvia and Liechtenstein could be among the opponents Gibraltar could face under such proposals.
