Two weeks to go before Euro Hockey Challenge III tournament is hosted in Gibraltar.
Preparations are already well underway with the main hosts Hawks already getting the set up ready for the 13th May.
In a press statement by Hawks HC a spokesman said, “Hawks hockey club was originally formed in 1989 as a ladies section of the Grammarians H.C. They split and became Hawks H.C. in the late nineties. The name may have changed with different sponsors but the coaching and playing personnel have largely stayed the same over the years. A testament to the staying power of both players and coach in putting up with each other for so long. They first played in Europe ,as a very young team, in 1996 in Bra Italy. Twenty years later they host the European club trophy for league champions for a second occasion in Gibraltar . As first Grammarians ladies H.C. and then the last twenty years as Hawks H.C. they have flown the flag for Gibraltar proudly. 2016 sees them with a flourishing youth section with various age groups which should see them continue to be the top team in Gibraltar for many years to come. It is interesting to note that eight players who played in that first European cup in Bra Italy are in this year’s squad.
“Having successfully won the Ladies & Development league last season, These matches will be played from Friday 13th May to Monday 16th May inclusive.
Teams participating this year will be:
HAWKS HC (Gibraltar)
Navax AHTC Wein (Austria)
HAHK Mladost (Croatia)
CARDIFF Uni (Wales)
EAGLES HC (Gibraltar)
NACKA LHK (Sweden)
“A great deal of hard work has gone into making this tournament possible. In addition to the increased amount of skills and fitness training sessions, the Hawks ladies have also been busy behind the scenes with fund raising. Events have included mornings at Morrisons, cake sales in Casemates and Bingo nights.
“Ball girls are also being trained for the tournament. They have already been practising at several of the ladies’ league matches and are constantly improving, thanks to their coach.
“It all proves to be an action packed long weekend and the Hawks ladies are looking forward to putting their efforts over the last six months into making this challenge cup a success for the future of women’s hockey.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Gibraltar.”
Two local teams will be competing in the tournament, Hawks and Eagles, both of whom will face each other in one of the group matches.
