The Gibraltar U16 national team have won their opening match at the Nicosia, Eleftheria Sports Arena, against Andorra. Gibraltar won 66-58 in a match which saw each side take the lead on several occasions during the group matches of the FIBA Under 16 European Champions Division C. Andorra came from having beaten Armenia yesterday Sunday by 71-48.
They play again tomorrow against Moldovawho have already beaten Albania 81-48 in their opening match.
The Under 16 girls playing in Andorra have fared differently losing their opening match 61-46 to Georgia. Although starting with a low scoring quarter the Gib girls picked up pace keeping close to Georgia in the point scoring stakes in the second and third quarter, before eventually actually having a higher ratio in the last quarter. Naylin Ward was recorded as their best player by FIBA with a higher efficiency score than Georgia’s best player. Ward recorded an impressive 24 rebounds won, 3 steals and 2 blocks along with her 9 points.
